Highlighting heart-warming melodies, West Yorkshire Symphony Orcestra's spring concert contains a lyrical Mozart concerto, that for bassoon in Bb major (1774), commissioned by wealthy amateur bassoonist, T F von Durnitz. The confidence and poise of the writing in what was Mozart's first wind concerto belies the fact that it was written by a teenager.
We will also foray into Bohemia’s woods and fields with the work that would cement Dvorak’s international reputation, the op 46 set of Slavonic Dances (1878). Originally written for piano duet, Dvorak capitalized on the success of the earlier works by orchestrating them following a commission from Brahm’s publisher Simrock.
These two works are prefaced by Beethoven’s dramatic Overture to Egmont (1810). The overture is the first of a series of incidental pieces inspired by Goethe’s play about the Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont, executed for standing up to Spanish military oppression in his home country. The history may be gloomy, but Beethoven’s musical depiction of Egmont’s valorous affirmation of liberty still radiates optimism.
