BAR MANAGER
£24,180 per annum (£15.50/hour) | 30 hours / 0.8 FTE | Predominantly Thu- Sun
Permanent PAYE preferred , but we are open to discussing a different arrangement with the right person.
THE OLD WOOLLEN
The Old Woollen is an independent live music, comedy and events venue at Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley. One night might be a packed live gig, the next comedy, bingo, theatre, dancing or something we haven’t quite found a category for yet.
At the centre of all of that is a busy bar. We’re looking for someone exceptional to take responsibility for it.
THE ROLE
We need a proper bar person.
Someone who cares about the pint that leaves the tap, the condition of the cellar it came from, the cleanliness of the glass it’s served in and the margin we make when we sell it.
You’ll lead the day to day bar operation: the team, stock, cellar, service standards and operational performance.
You’ll organise staff, manage rotas and ordering, and make sure the bar is ready for everything from a 150 person seated show to a packed standing gig.
This is a hands-on management role. You won’t manage the whole venue; you’ll work alongside the directors, senior staff, operational and technical teams, with genuine ownership of making the bar excellent.
RUNNING A GREAT BAR
- Deliver a consistently excellent range of drinks and deliver high quality customer service.
- Keep the bars and cellar clean, organised, safe and ready for service.
- Manage stock, ordering, deliveries and regular stock takes; investigate discrepancies and reduce wastage.
- Take responsibility for beer quality, line cleaning, cellar standards, gas, cooling, dispense and post mix systems.
- Notice equipment problems quickly and make sure the right support is brought in.
- Maintain strong opening, closing, till, licensing and hygiene procedures.
- Work with suppliers and senior colleagues on product selection, pricing and purchasing.
The ambition is simple: an excellent selection of drinks, brilliant service, an immaculate operation, and a healthy margin.
LEADING THE TEAM
A brilliant bar needs a brilliant team. You’ll lead positively, set clear standards and build a team that can deliver even when you’re not standing next to them.
- Plan rotas and staffing around the events programme.
- Supervise, support and develop bar staff and shift leaders.
- Support recruitment and induction, and build a practical training programme.
- Maintain clear expectations around service, hygiene, reliability and accountability.
- Identify and develop people who can take on more responsibility.
UNDERSTANDING THE BUSINESS
Working with the directors and senior staff, you’ll keep a close eye on sales, gross profit, margins, stock, wastage, labour and product mix. You’ll help set sensible targets, spot problems early and make practical improvements.
ABOUT YOU
We’re looking for strong experience in bars, pubs, hospitality or live events. You’ll ideally bring:
- Experience supervising or managing a busy bar.
- Confidence leading people and organising shifts.
- Good stock, ordering and cellar knowledge.
- A strong understanding of beer quality and hygiene.
- An understanding of GP, margins and wastage.
- The ability to deliver calm, friendly service under pressure.
- A practical, collaborative approach: you notice things and do something about them
You don’t necessarily need to have been a Bar Manager before. An excellent, experienced supervisor ready to take the next step could be exactly who we’re looking for.
WHAT MATTERS TO US
Most importantly, you’ll care: about the quality of drinks delivered, the numbers, the team, the customer and the state of the cellar at the end of the night.
We’re not looking for someone to inherit a rota and keep things ticking over. There’s an opportunity here to take hold of the bar and make it properly excellent.
- Better systems.
- Better products.
- Better margins.
- Better training.
- Less wastage.
- A brilliant team.
THE WORKING PATTERN
The role is around 30 hours per week (0.8 FTE), predominantly Thursday Sunday and around our events programme. Regular evening and weekend work is part of the job, with some flexibility for ordering, stocktaking, training, meetings and preparation.
You’ll have the support of the directors, senior staff and wider Old Woollen team but genuine ownership of the day to day bar operation.
To apply, send us a short introduction and your CV to info@tam events.com telling us why this role interests you.
We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible and be part of the team in the busy period up until Christmas.
