Documented tales of possession, monsters and the living dead!

In late 2019 Robert Lloyd Parry inherited the contents of a flat belonging to a dead man that he’d never met. The property was full boxes, which were themselves stuffed with chilling documents: letters, diaries, newspaper cuttings, notebooks, postcards… Filed in disarray, they all told impossible tales of terror.

After the stunning revelation of two documents in Farsley last year, Lloyd Parry now begs leave to share with you some more items from The Archive of Dread…

Presented by Nunkie Theatre, hugely popular with Old Woollen audiences for their regular series of Halloween ghost stories by candle-light by the master of the form, MR James.

“Lloyd Parry [is] one of the country’s most idisyncratic and underrated performers…” - TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT

Devoted to recreating the atmosphere of a live Joy Division gig, Transmission emulate the sound of one of the most inventive, evocative and influential groups of their era.

Joy Division were formed in the late 1970s and dissolved in 1980 after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. The remaining members went on to form New Order and have achieved much critical and commercial success. The influence of Joy Division, however, was far reaching. They were considered the pioneering band of the post-punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Forty three years on you can relive the dark, cavernous sound of Joy Division through Transmission - the UK's number one Joy Division tribute act.

Professor Alice Roberts is a biological anthropologist, author and broadcaster, and returns to the Old Woollen following a sell out show in 2023.

She has presented well over a hundred television programmes, on subjects ranging from biology and archaeology and history. Her television debut came as a human bone expert on Channel 4’s "Time Team", in 2001. After presenting "Coast" on BBC2, she went on to write and present a range of BBC series, including "The Incredible Human Journey", "Origins of Us", "Prehistoric Autopsy" and the long-running archaeology series, "Digging for Britain", as well as several Horizon programmes. She also presents "Britain’s Most Historic Towns" on Channel 4.

Her books include "The Incredible Human Journey", "Evolution: The Human Story", "The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being", "Tamed: Ten species that Changed our World", "Ancestors: The Prehistory of Britain in Seven Burials", "Buried" and "Anatomical Oddities".

For this event Alice will be taking about her new book CRYPT (copies of which will be available to buy). The book looks at how ancient bones hold the key to understanding the impact of violence and disease in medieval society. We come face to face with individuals who lived and died between ten and five centuries ago: the victims of the St Brice’s Day Massacre, the patients at one of the earliest hospitals in England, the archers who went down with the Mary Rose. Weaving together history, archaeology and genetics, Alice Roberts reveals how cutting-edge science is transforming our view of the past.

Mark Thomas is 61 and has been doing stand up and theatre for 38.5 years and this show is back to stand up. Jokes, rants, politics, play and the occasional sing song.... If you don’t know what he does ask your parents.

In his time he has won awards (current total is now officially ‘fuckloads’), forced a politician to resign, changed the laws on tax and protest, become the Guinness Book of Records world record holder for number of protests in 24 hours, taken the police to court 3 times and won, walked the length of the Israeli Wall in the West Bank and generally mucked about trying to have fun and fuck the right people off.

This show is more of the above. An exclusive preview before Mark travels up to Edinburgh for the world-famous Fringe Festival.
